Birth* |
10 March 1810 |
Brooklyn, New York, http://www.pbq.com.au/home/mccloskey/cardinal.htm His boyhood home was located at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Lawrence Street in Brooklyn, New York. His parents arrived a few years before his birth from the parish of Dungiven, County Derry, Ireland. There were no churches in Brooklyn when he was a boy; he and his mother would take a rowboat across the East River to the old St. Patrick’s Cathedral to attend mass. At the age of 12 years he was sent to school at St. Mary’s College, Emmettsburg, Maryland and attended it for 7 years. The only mention of family were three neices who were at his bedside when he passed: “Mrs. John Kelly and Miss Mullen, of this city, and Mrs. Cleary of Washington and her husband, and Dr. E.L. Keyes.” |

On web page, Brian Mitchell wrote to The Genealogy Centre in Londonderry and received from them a comprehensive package regarding McCloskeys in that area of Ireland, including Patrick & Elizabeth (parents of John). The material was accompanied by this letter:
Thank you for your completed research form and payment of $25. As you can see from the enclosed photocopy, Cardinal John McCloskey's parents were Patrick McCloskey of Killunaght and Elizabeth Hassan of Coolnamonan. These townlands are located in the civil parish of Banagher. A map and parish report for Banagher parish is included with the report. This parish adjoins that of Dungiven which is traditionally regarded as the homeland of the McCloskeys. Based on the above information we would expect William McCloskey's baptism (c.1806) and the marriage of his parents to be recorded in the Roman Catholic registers of either Feeny or Dungiven. Unfortunately the earliest entries in these registers are 1848 and 1825 respectively. This almost certainly means there will be no record of either the baptisms of Wm and John (Cardinal), or the marriage of Patrick McCloskey to Elizabeth Hassan/Harron. There are 2 R.C. graveyards in Dungiven, namely at the Old Priory and around the existing chapel in Dungiven. I am enclosing with this report a copy of McCloskey headstones in these 2 graveyards (the origs of these transcripts are held in the Public Record Office, Belfast). To conclude, church registers will not allow you to trace your McCloskey.
Also:
Patrick McCloskey of Kilunaught (near Dungiven) and Elizabeth Hassan of Coolnamonan came to the U.S. in 1808. They had 13 children. One of the oldest, probably 2nd child, was JOHN CARDINAL McCLOSKEY, the first American Cardinal. John was baptised at old St. Peter's on Barclay Street in New York City of May 6, 1810. Family lore says I am descended from John's older brother, named William. William could have been born either in Ireland or U.S. in 1806? He is 74 years on 1880 Census, living with daughter in Albany. |
Birth* |
|
Dungiven, County Derry, Ireland, Cardinal McCloskey's parents were from County Derry, Ireland and were from a better class of Irish farmers. His ancestors lived there for centuries and were priests and medical professionals. The Dungiven Church has his ancestors’ gravestones in its cemetery that are “more than a century old”. His father, Patrick McCloskey was born in Dungiven. Another note says: Patrick McCloskey of Killunaght. |
Marriage* |
between 1807 and 1808 |
Elizabeth Harron-Hassan; County Derry, Ireland, It is believed that Patrick and Elizabeth were related somehow. The parish priest at Banagher opposed their marriage. They were determined to be married before leaving for America. They were married at the Cathedral of Derry and set off for Brooklyn in the Spring of 1808. |
