Military* | Copied from Genealogical Fragments on Nevins by John J Latting - a loose manuscript at NYG&BS. David Nevins, son of David and Mary (Lathrop) Nevins was born at Canterbury CT 12 Sep 1747. Miss Caulkin in her History of Norwich, thus refers to him and the incidents of his life "He enlisted early in the contest for liberty, and lived long to witness its happy results. He was first employed as the confidential messenger of the Norwich Committee of Correspondence, one of those volunteer patriotic agencies that managed the whole business of the revolution in its earlier stages. His personal activity and daring spirit combined with trustworthiness and ardent participation in the popular cause particularly fitted him for the work. But the Battle of Lexington carried him from all minor employments into the army. He joined the 8th Company, 6th Regiment, which was organized on Norwich Green in May 1775, and was its color bearer on Dorchester Heights. He remained with the army during the Seige of Boston, the occupation of New York, and the retreat through the Jerseys, returning home in the winter of 1777. He did not, however, relinquish the service of his country, but was several times again in the field upon various emergencies during the war." Capt Nevins married 7 Dec 1777, Mary the eldest daughter of Russell and Mary (Gray) Hubbard of Norwich CT. He died in the City of New York 21 Jan 1838.
Marriage* | 7 December 1777 | Mary Russell Hubbard; Norwich, New London Co., Connecticut, Russel Nevins notes also state that their marriage is in the "family Bible", which family unknown.4,5 |
To-Do* | Son William's diary "Select Remains" says they had a sister Louisa Kay who died 27 Mar 1830. I suspect this is out of context, and the original needs to be looked at again to get a better interpretation. Other researchers do not show this child. List of things TO-Do

Note* | Cornelia Leonard Perkins; In an article entitiled "Catalog of American Portraits, Archives of the National Portrat Gallery, Washington DC" it mentions that you might look there for famous people, but you will find others there as well "Whether or not that person made even a signifant contribution - if that person was American and lived - they are interested"... "However, if perchance you wanted to find out about a Connecticut lady named Mrs David Nevins who lived in Norwich, you certainly wouldn't find that in most places where you looked, but you go to the National Portrait Gallery and just because they are interested in persons not normally found in any book of famous Americans, there will be a portrait of Mrs David Nevins. It hanges in Hampshire England, but was painted fy Rembrandt Field and it is recorded in the National Portrait Gallery." With that clue, a search on Nevins was done on the internet index for the National Portrait Gallery http://portraits.npg.si.edu/pnpg.htm and these entries were found: Name: Nevins, Mary Hubbard Born: 1775 Died: 1875? and Name: Blake, Mary Hubbard Nevins, Mrs Blake, Francis Stanton, Mrs Nevins, Mary Hubbard Born: 1819 Germantown/Pennsylvania/United States of America Died: 1844 Neither set of years match the wife of Captain David Nevins, whose maiden name is Mary Hubbard. However, the years of the second one would work for the wife of Captain David's grandson, David Henry Nevins, whose wife's name is unknown. So it is a guess that she is the subject of the portrait, and not Captain David's wife. The one "born 1775" is probably the wife of Captain David, but with errors in the dates. Another entry is Name: Nevins, Anna; MacDowell, Marian... with no dates. Since David Henry's daughter Marion married a MacDowell, this entry probably refers to her. Unidentified Nevins found in the search are: Name: Nevins, James Born: 1790 Died: 1866 Occupation/Distinction: Banker/Commerce, Business and Administration Name: Nevins, Peter J Born: 1810 Died: 1910? Occupation/Distinction: Name: Nevins, Thomas Born: 1783 Died: 1839 Occupation/Distinction: Planter/Agriculturist/Natural Resources 2
