(The 1917 Old Settlers' Association Necrology Report, as prepared by Estelle M. Castle, printed in the Joliet Evening Herald-News, October 6, 1917, transcribed by Lawrence B. Peet.)
Ranks Of Pioneers Thinning; Necrology List For One Year By Estelle M. Castle.
During the year from Oct. 1916 to Oct. 1, this year, the ranks of the pioneers of Will county, have been noticeably thinned. Three years ago there were 114 deaths from within and outside the membership of the Will County Pioneers' Association, two years ago 227 was the number and last year 433. A slight decrease was shown this year with a total of (missing, 317 by my count - L. B. Peet) To the younger generation, these pioneers have, in their lifetime, offered examples of integrity and ability that have given character to the community life of Will county.
As necrologist I present the following as near a complete list as was (missing)ilable of the old settlers called to their eternal rest.
Dec. 16, 1916 - Diedrich STASSEN, 70, pioneer resident, at his home in Peotone.
