My great grandfather's diary states that his wife Josephine Benish (Benes written in above it) was born in Germany or Bohemia in 1841, but both her parents were from Austria (John Benish d:May 28, 1897 and Mary J. Benish d: 1912 or 1913). I assume that Josephine's parents came to America with her, since she immigrated to Minnesota in 1853 at the age of 12. I know that she had a brother, Albert, who was slow and lived with Josephine and her husband Bernhard H. (or Bernard) Stassen on their farm in West St. Paul, MN. It is very possible that she had other siblings in other states as well. What is your grandfather's name? Do you know HIS father's name? Benish Family Genealogy Forum Re: Beatrice Benish from Minnesota Posted by: julie johnson (ID *****4671) Date: May 14, 2002 at 21:14:48 In Reply to: Beatrice Benish from Minnesota by Tara Appl of 53 My great great grandmother was Josephine Benish. Her parents were Mary J. Benish (died 1912 or 1913) and John Benish (died 1887), both of whom were born in Austria. Josephine was born in Bohemia or Germany in 1848 and died in St. Paul in 1921. She emigrated to St. Paul in 1883. It is quite possible that she had siblings who went to other areas of the US. I know that she had a brother named Albert who lived with she and her husband, Bernhard Stassen on their farm in West St. Paul, MN. If any of this rings a bell, please contact me. surname Benish or Benes Posted by: julie johnson (ID *****4671) Date: May 14, 2002 at 21:43:07 My great, great grandparents were John and Mary J. Benish or Benes, both born in Austria. Their respective dates of death were May 28, 1897 and 1912/13, presumably in Prague, Austria. My paternal great grandmother, their daughter, was Josephine Benish or Benes, born in Bohemia (Czechoslovakia)in 1848. She emmigrated from Germany in 1853 and married Bernhard H. (or Bernard) Stassen in St. Paul, MN.in 1869. Josephine's brother, Albert Benish, lived with them on the farm until his death in 1943. It is quite possible that Josephine had other siblings who came to America, but I have no information on them. If any of these names ring a bell with anyone, I would love to hear from you. | |

Birth | 1774 | Feldhausen, Schortens, Jever, Oldenburg (now Niedersachsen), Germany, per IGI http://www.ngw.nl/int/dld/germany.htm Germany is divided in States (Länder). These states are subdivided in Landkreise or Rural districts, which are made up of municipalities (Gemeinden) and Kreisfreie Städte, or free urban districts. In some states municipalities are combined into Ämter and Grossgemeinden (larger bodies, but the individual municipalities still exist). Niedersachsen is a modern State, which is a combination of several older states or territories, mainly Oldenburg , Hannover, Braunschweig and Schaumburg-Lippe. OLDENBURG Urban district (Kreisfrie Stadt) : Oldenburg State : Niedersachsen Origin/Meaning: Oldenburg was the seat of the counts of the same name, and received city rights in the 13th century. The oldest seal dates from the 13th century and is known since 1307. The seal shows only a castle. In the late 14th century, the patron saint, St. Lawrence is shown in the gate, with the arms of the counts of Oldenburg on each side. From the 16th century onwards the patron saint was removed and only the, simplified, arms of the counts are seen in the gate. These arms were officially adopted in 1927. FELDHAUSEN State : Baden-Württemberg District (Kreis) : Sigmaringen Incorporated into : 1970s Gammertingen Doing a search on http://www.multimap.com/ gets this: Searching for Feldhausen found 6 places 1 FELDHAUSEN, GAMMERTINGEN, 72501 2 FELDHAUSEN, SULINGEN, 27232 3 FELDHAUSEN, LILIENTHAL, 28865 4 FELDHAUSEN, HASELÜNNE, 49740 5 FELDHAUSEN, SCHORTENS, 26419 6 FELDHAUSEN, BOTTROP, 46244 |
