Hanover, Chautauqua, NY, Samuel's son Mortimer Nevins gives the following account of his father's experience shortly after their arrival in Hanover NY. "They were settledin the wilderness near the shores of Lake Erie and close by Catheraugus Creek which was the line of the Indian Reservation. Everything in hte provision line was scarce and they came near starving at times. When they got a little patch cleared and some potatoes planted they were obliged to dig them up and eat the seed after it had grown up out of the ground. One morning Father started early leaving Mother and baby Oscar without a morsel to eat. He traveled all day on foot trying to obtain food. About dark stopped at his Fathers who had about one quart of corn meal. He divided it with him. He took his share home and they undertook to bake it but they were so hungry that they ate it before it was half done. At another time Mother took the baby on the horse and rode 12 miles to buy a loaf of bread.3 Dr. Mortimer Nevins |
