Info on General William Lytle, Village of Williamsburg
From: http://www.williamsburgohio.org/page15.htm
In April of 1791 William Lytle, Founder of Williamsburg encountered a War Party of Shawnee in Adams County. It was a surveying foray in the vicinity of present-day Wrightsville when Lytle, with Nathaniel Massie, James Tittle and Israel Donalson, were surprised by the Indians and took off running towards Massie's Station without a fight. Donalson fell while attempting to jump over a small stream and was taken prisoner by the Red Men. Since that day, more than two centuries ago, the stream has carried the name Donalson Creek. Where modern-day U.S. 52 crosses it, The Ohio Department of Transportation has signage incorrectly identifying it as "Donaldson Creek."
When this exciting adventure took place, William was living at Massie's Station. Although only 21 years of age at this time, he already had four years of Indian Warfare under his belt, was learning the science of surveying and had begun a lucrative career in land speculation. Just how long he remained at Massie's Station is now unknown, but it is believed he remained at least a few months and perhaps as long as a year, learning valuable information from the intrepid Nathaniel Massy on the methods of surveying in the wilderness occupied by hostile nations of Indians.
Regardless, William Lytle eventually returned to his home in Fayette County, Kentucky were he continued to live until the year 1800 when he moved to present-day Clermont County. There in the mid 1790's he had acquired several hundred acres of land on the East Fork of the Little Miami River. In the Winter if 1795-96, William, with his brother John, Platted a small town on the West Bank of the river and named it "Lytlestown." Not long after, when this new town was officially dedicated, the name was changed to Williamsburgh. When Clermont County was established by Proclamation on December 6, 1800, William Lytle's flourishing village was designated the seat of Justice for the new county. Williamsburg then remained the County Seat until 1824 when the courts were moved to Batavia. Due to Lytle's efforts in promoting the settlement of the area that later became Clermont County, he is frequently referred to today as the "Father of Clermont County."
When the courts first convened at Williamsburg, William Lytle was commissioned the first Clerk of Courts. He held this position until Ohio's admission as a state in March of 1803. Lytle remained in Williamsburg until 1809 when he moved to the rapidly growing "Queen City of the West", Cincinnati. There, he built a fine home on the site of present-day Lytle Park, directly across Pike Street from today's Taft Art Museum.
By the time Lytle moved his family to Cincinnati, he had become a wealthy man from his many land deals and business ventures. He moved among the circles of the powerful and influential and, shortly after war erupted between the U.S. and Great Britain in 1812, William Lytle was appointed a Major General of the Ohio Militia. He was thereafter known as "General Lytle" the remainder of his life.
In 1829, all that learned from Nathaniel Massie almost four decades earlier, paid of when he was appointed Surveyor General of the public lands of Ohio, Indiana and Michigan by his friend President Andrew Jackson. Unfortunately, he did not enjoy this high position for very long, dying on March 17, 1831 at age 61.
