Religion* 1911 Epworth Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, South Bend, St Joseph Co., Indiana, Newspaper clipping from unknown newspaper, unknown date (though it is calculated to be 1930 since it was 19 years from 1911). It was found in the box of Ophelia Kaley, who is suspected to be the first cousin of Joseph.
     Church Erects Tablet
     A bronze tablet was unveiled in Epworth Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, South Bend, Ind., Sunday, November 30, in honor of Joseph E. and Mary E. Kaley, of St. Joseph, Mich., who gave the church to the Methodists of Sound Bend nineteen years ago. Both Mr. and Mrs. Kaley were present at the in(faded area) ceremonies which marked the (dedicating or unveiling, faded area) of the tablet. The principal (faded area) was George A. Knoblock, a member of the congregation, who praised Mr. and Mrs. Kaley for their liberal gifts to the city. In addition to building the church, they also were donors of the Kaley School and Kaley Park, now Bendix Park, and also assited the church in acquiring a parsonage. In addition to Mr. Knoblock's address, Dr. George F. Craig, pastor of Epworth Church, and Dr. George W. Switzer also paid tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Kaley. During the serices eleven persons were received into membership in the church.
     The tablet, placed in the vestibule of the church, bears the following inscription: "Joseph E. Kaley and Mary E. Kaley, who had the vision to turn material worth into spiritual values, erected and endowed this house of worship and presented it to the Methodist Episcopal Church in the year of our Lord, 1911. A good deed is immortal."

Obituary* 31 May 1949 The Herald Press pg 12, St Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan, Joseph E. Kaley, well known St Joseph resident and former South Bend philanthropist, died at 3 a.m. Sunday at the St. Joseph's hospital where he had been taken after being stricken with a heart attac at his home, 903 Lake blvd. He was 87 years old.
     He and his wife came to St. Joseph 35 years ago after he retired from business in South Bend. She preceded him in death 10 years ago.
     Mr. and Mrs. Kaley built the Epworth Memorial Methodist church in South Bend, presenting the edifice to the congregation, as well as presenting a park, now known as Bendix park, to th Indiana city. He was a charter member of the South Bend Elks lodge and the Epworth Memorial Methodist church.
     Mr Kaley was born in Culver Ind. on March 7, 1862. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Kaley. In 1890 he moved to South Bend, being active in the real estate business until he retired and moved here 35 years ago.
     Two daughters, Mrs. Louisa Ekstine and Mrs. Lavina Everett are both dead.
     He is surviced by one brother, Thomas Kaley, 91, of Argonia, Kan. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
     Funeral services will be held at the Keritkowske funeral home at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. J.J. Bailey of Crown Poit, Ind. will officiate at the services, with burial in Crystal Springs cemetery.
