moved with two wagon-loads of relatives to, Celina, TX, From a reoprt, "My Maternal Ancestors - Their Migration to Celina TN Area and Their Lives Through World War II" by Shila Norman, Nov. 1975.
The trip was very hard and long, made in covered wagons. Along the journey, highway robbery was not uncommon. The women slept during the day while the men drove, and at night the men slept while the women kept watch. Robbers would steal anything that was not guarded, especially the mules. When horses or mules were stolen, someone would have to travel to the nearest house or settlement to buy a new team.
When Texas was finally reached, it was really a lot different than what they were anticipating. One very great disadvantage was the sudden storms (dust storms and tornadoes) that would come up with little warning while they were working in the fields. When this happened, the people only had enough itme to unhitch the mule from the plow, put him in the barn, and run to the "dugout" where they would stay until the storm was over. The dugout was a room under the ground, and it was not one of the family's favorite places. Just as the family had to get in out of the storm, so did other creatures. Among these were scorpions. The scorpions really terrified Great Grandmother Nevans. She used to tell my grandmama how they would have to stand in the middle of the little room because the scorpions were running back and forth on the walls during a storm. My relatives were not accustomed to these unexpecdted difficulties. ... after five years, they returned to TN bringing with them my grandfather who was the oldest son and a daughter, Dora. T.W. tended the ferry when he returned to Celina, and his wife (Sary Lee) kept school teachers ad boaders.2 Sarah Jon Lee Fancher |
