Petty Creek or Petit Jean Creek or something else?

Jessie Walker married Cynthia East. There is a place on the internet that says Jesse was born at Petty Creek Indian Territory South Carolina (1), and some that say Cynthia was born Petit Jean Creek Arkasas (2, 3). According to the 1850 census, both Jessie & Cynthia were born in South Carolina.

If SC is the correct place, the name is probably supposed to be Pee Dee as there is a river by that name in SC. No creek seems to have that name per GNIS, but it may have been a "local" name. The Pee Dee River runs through two counties, Chesterfield and Marlboro.

There is a Petit Jean Creek in AR, and a case can be made for that because their first two children were born in AR. However, if that is correct, then why did they tell the census taker they were born in SC? Though sometimes neighbors gave the census taker the informaton, it seems likely in this case that they gave the information themselves, as a neighbor would not have known that the first two children were born in AR, the second two in LA, and the rest in TX.

This family is for a family friend, so I am not actively researching it. I've made this page to help others who are researching the Walker and East families to know where to start their searches.
