That led to SLC 1430023 which has his Declaration of Intent dated 19 Jul 1854. He renounces allegiance to the King of Saxony, and signs it Carl Mühlstein. In the body of the document, the clerk spells it Charles Millstein.
There is another Declaration dated 19 Jul 1854 where the clerk wrote the name Charles Mülstein Jr, and it was signed Charles Wilhelm Mühlstein in very educated looking handwriting. This would be the oldest son, but why is he not on passenger list?
Germans To America vol 1 Jan 1850-1855 pg 462-3 has the passenger list for the ship Elise from Bremen to New York arriving 25 Apr 1851. The list shows Muelenstein, C.H. 42, Herm. 14, Franz 9, and Nanny 16.
That led to the original passenger list on SLC 175453, where those names are confirmed. C.H. is a weaver from Saxony. The relationships are not shown.

Obituary His obituary was Obit (from scrapbook, no paper name or date).
Karl Muehlstein, who died at his home on Juniper Street last Monday evening at 9 o'clock, was one of our oldest residents. He came to this country from Austria in 1851 and located in the 12th ward, but moved to the 16th ward in 1869, where he has resided ever since. he was a weaver by occupation. Mr Muehlstein has been ill for almost a year and while he did not suffer to any great extent yet he felt as if he was to be called away soon. The funeral took place from the residence of his son, A O Muehlstein 4744 Liberty Ave at 3:30 Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended by relatives and friends. The deceased was in his 83rd year. He has resided in Bloomfield almost 25 years and prior to his death could relate many incidents of interest that took place in our home. [note that the obit says Liberty Ave but death certificate says Juniper Ave - as does son Adolph's death certificate]
