Walter Hubbard, 52, Yreka manager for the Standard Oil Company, died of explosion burns at the Siskiyou County General Hospital at 12:25 p.m. Friday.
The injuries had been incurred in a gas blast at the Hubbard home, 548 North Main Stree, about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Dr. Richard W. Jones, earlier Friday said Hubbard had received mostly first and second degree burns, with some third degree, on the face, head, arms, chest, and legs.
Hubbard's wife, singed on the arms and suffering from shock, also received treatment at the Siskiyou County General Hospital, being taken there at the same time as her husband.
Mrs. Hubbard has been released from the hospital only a few minutes before her husband's death.
She told friends at the hospital she sent her husband to the basement to light the water heater when she failed to get hot water at the kitchen sink.
The force of the explosion almost blew Hubbard out of the basement. The blast which tore the kitchen door from its hinged and shattered the front door, rocked nearby homes.
The suction of air and blast of the explosion disarranged the house to a considerable extent and blew some papers and household items into the front yard.
The Yreka Fire Department responded immediately to the alarm. Firemen in gas masks entered the basement to check damage and extinguish what flames had begun.
The word that Hubbard had been badly burned circulated quickly, friends and company employes converging at the hospital to offer blood transfusians.
Authorities notified Hubbard's sone, Gene, who is a student at San Jose State, and Hubbard's brother, also of San Jose, and requested them to come to Yreka.
Hubbard was a member of the Yreka Rotary Club, the Knights of Pythias, and the Free and Accepted Masons of Turlock. He and his wife also were Greenhorn Grange members.
He came to Yreka about September, 1942. He formerly lived in Sacramento, Santa Cruz, and other valley points.
Besides his wife and son, who arrived by Southwest Airways here shortly after his father passed away, Hubbard leaves his mother, Mrs. Jessie Lee Hubbard, San Jose, and brothers in San Jose, Washington D.C. and Bakersfield.
