Divorce*1868 He and Margaret Elizabeth Fleharty were divorced in 1868; Divorce record (Evd 259) shows he originally went to Pike's Peak CO in 1858, came back a few times, & notified (in 1868) his wife he was staying in CO, and thus abandoned family.

     In a list of advertisements: "Lost, a pocket account book, belonging to M. K. Roberts. The finder will confer a favor by leaving same at this office." Though it says M.K. Roberts, the Denver Public Library's index card catalog has this entry listed under "Roberts, N K" and there's no evidence there was an M K Roberts in Denver at the same time period.

     The Denver Public Library's index card catalog has this entry listed under "Roberts, N K"
Letter advertised 12 Nov 1871 Rocky Mountain News pg 1 col 7. However, when looking at http://coloradohistoricnewspapers.org where I found the rest of the newspaper entries, they didn't have a paper for Nov 12th.

     In a column labeled "Black List" there is a list of news debtors with an entry for "Roberts, N K Trinidad $5." 
Census18801880 He appeared on the 1880 census as the head of household, an unknown place Not in soundex for CO or WY. Since he was a stage coach driver ("teamster") during that time period, it's unlikely he was caught in the census. The LDS 1880 everyname CDs does not show him either. 
Residence1888 He lived in 1888 at 910 16th St, Denver, Arapahoe Co., Colorado: Per pension, he lived there at that time.

     21 Sep 1889 document is the actual record of his service. This document calls him Nathaniel K Roberts and he always signs his name with a period after Nathan, leading us to believe that his full name was properly Nathaniel. None of the other documents show him as Nathaniel. Quoting document: Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions Nathaniel K Roberts was enrolled on the 9day of Sep 1861 at Central City in Co M, 1(st) Regiment of Colorado Cav Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 6 day of Oct 1861 at Golden City. He is reported on roll from enrollment to 31 Dec 1861 present - Jan & Feb 1862 absent with escort subsistence train for New Mexico. March and April 1862 present - Same to 31 Aug 1862. Sep & Oct 1862 absent on detached service escort of ____ Mrs ___rsis to Denver - Nov & Dec 1862 present - same to 28 Feb 1863 - Mar & Apr 1863 absent sick at Denver since 25 Mar 1863 - May & Jun 1863 present same to 28 Feb 1864 - Mar & Apr 1864 absent (Re-enlisted in Vet Vol) on 60 days furlough from 5 Apr 1864 - May & Jun 1864 absent on furlough - Jul & Aug 1864 present - same to 31 Oct 1864 - a saddler last on file roll of Co F 1st Vet Col Cav to which transferred.
     25 Nov 1889 has a card indicating that he's at Leavenworth Kansas.
     13 Jun 1890 age 53 (but this should be 55). A declaration was made from his residence at National Military Home at Leavenworth Kansas. This declaration shows him to be 5ft 7 1/2in with fair complexion, light hair, and blue eyes. He contracted asthma about the year 1863 while in the service and line of duty from which "I have ever since suffered and at this time am wholly incapacitated for manual labor". His occupation since discharge has been teamster.
     19 Jul 1890 age 55 Quoting from this declaration (still at Leavenworth) - "This instrument is given as a supplement and part of an original... The cause for omission to state by claimant the following disabilities in original was haste he being a hospital nurse and the anxiety of his position produced forgetfulness while absent from his ward hence the necessity for this supplement." In addition to the asthma he originally spoke about he has Piles, total deafness in right ear and weak eyes. This time he is shown as 5ft 8 1/2in, fair complexion, red hair and hazel eyes.
     22 Mar 1893 "has this day been discharged from the Home.
     28 Mar 1894 says there's a change of address with further note on May 5 that it's Monte Visa, Rio Grande, CO. Then 13 Nov 1894 shows a further change to Durango, La Plata, CO.
     23 Sep 1896 age 61 still at Leavenworth. His address is 320 Pelo___ or Lelo___ unreadable but likely will prove to be the address of the military home. CHECK THIS THEORY OUT.
     7 Apr 1900 declaration for increase of pension shows he's resident of Craig, Routt, CO.
     12 Aug 1904 application for pension as resident of Buffalo, Johnson, WY with address being the Soldiers Home. The two witnesses, also at the Home have known him 4 years implying that he moved there 4 years previous. However, a May 1901 document implies he's still in Craig CO at that time.
     21 Jul 1905 declaration for an increase has a witness who has known him for 25 years - James H Tantum. In 1907, James claims to have known him 40 years. Still in Buffalo WY.
     4 Oct 1905 a statement was notarized in Alpha, Henry, IL that the notary saw a record of Nathan (2nd) in a book "styled the Life of Our Blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" (probably a Bible, but could be another religious book). In it was the birth of Nathan K on 13 Jul 1835. (Note: we talked to daughter of Don Roberts in Il and they know of nothing fitting that description that exists today).
     9 Apr 1910 "re-admitted" to Marion Branch National Home (Grant Co IN).
     14 Jul 1910 document with last known signature.
     26 Aug 1910 "discharged from this branch" (Marion Branch IN).
     17 Sep 1910 "admitted to this branch" (Mountain Branch, TN).

     23 May 1912 age 76 This declaration for pension was from Washington Co Tennessee and states he is a resident of National Soldiers Home. This time he's 5ft 8in, light complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair; and his occupation was laborer. It also states that he had lived in Buffalo, Johnson, Wyoming but doesn't say when.
     13 Nov 1912 is a copy of the reissued pension certificate which was "transmitted" back to Wash DC from "Mountain branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers", the accompanying transmittal form was dated 22 Feb 1913
(which see).
     3 Feb 1913 "admitted to this branch" (Mountain Branch, TN).
     22 Feb 1913 states that he died "at this Branch" on 21 Feb 1913. Cause of death was Chronic Interstitial Nephritis, that he was a widower, and that his next of kin was Henry C Roberts of Peoria IL (son).
     19 Mar 1913 document was the pension drop card.
