Anecdote*25 November 1938 Have copy of a letter written to a Mrs Daly from Jno. Wells, 114 S Hudson Ave, Pasadena CA. The information he is relating is "in regard to our old home". He says (in part):
I was about four years of age when we moved in (shall be 82 on the 30th inst). I distinctly remember an accident which happened to me when my eldest brother started to carry me upstairs (via back-stairs). In shifting me from his arm to his shoulder he lost his hold, and threw me over his head landing me on the floor, breaking my left arm, which had to be reset to my further discomfort.
I did not know that the old place had been dubbed Wells's Grove. My Grandfather's home in Toronto is, I understand, stilled called (Davenport) Wells's Hill. He settled there when Toronto was know as Fort York.
I cannot explain why Father built so large a house, unless that it was a case of "Coming events casting their shadows before them", for the family included nine brothers and two sisters who all attained their majority, one son, the eldest dying in infancy. My Uncle Robert, who lived at Davenport in Toronto, called the place "Wells's Folly". My Father did not live abroad. He was born in Toronto and was educated in Avignon, France.
[Another part of letter says] As I left Canada in July 1876...
Death*11 January 1942 He died on 11 January 1942 at South Pasadena, Los Angeles Co., California, at age 85.
Burial* He was buried at San Gabriel Cemetery, San Gabriel, Los Angeles Co., California.
