John (2) Snowden, son of John (1) and Ann (Barrett) Snowden, was born
1685, and married, 4 Oct 1720, his second wife, Ruth (Fitz Randolph) Harrison,
widow, a sister of Nathaniel Fitz Randolph, who gave land to Princeton University,
of an old and prominent family of New Jersey. She was born at Piscataway, New
Jersey, 8 Apr 1695, and died at Maidenhead, now Lawrenceville, New Jersey 5
Sep 1780. They later located in Philadelphia where John Snowden died 24 Mar
1751. John Snowden was the first Presbyterian elder in America. He was ordained
in First Presbyterian Church Philadelphia, 1704.

The following is from SNOWDEN 1677-1968 by Charles Randolph Snowden,
supplied by The Historical Society of Pennsylvania on 30 Sep 1997 to Rex Ennis.

John was born either at "White Hill," the Snowden plantation in West New Jersey,
or in the vicinity of Falls Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He moved from
Bucks County to Philadelphia before his father and, like his father, was closely
involved in the Presbyterian movement in Philadelphia. He was a member of the
Presbyterian Synod of Pennsylvania from 1717 until 1727.

In time, he became a leading merchant in the then infant city of Philadelphia. His
ships sailed into all commercial parts of the world. One strong evidence of his piety
and abiding faith in Divine Providence is presented in the fact that all his bills of
lading were made out commencing, "This cargo is sent to sea under the care of an
overruling and Divine "Providence."

John established his home on the west side of Second St in Philadelphia, than a
residential center in the burgeoning city. The home, old number 141 below Walnut,
extended from Second St to what them was Dock Creek. John purchased the
property on 19 Mar 1705, from Edward Shippen, first mayor of Philadelphia under
the Charter of 1701. Shippen had purchased it from William Penn on 24 Oct 1701.
The home built on this land was to remain in the Snowden family for three
generations, and through most of the 18th century. John left it to his son, Isaac, who
in turn left it to his son Isaac Jr, who married Cornelia Clarkson.

The property abutted the land on which stood "Shippey's Great House," home of
the city's first mayor and later known as the "Governor's House."

John F Watson, in his "Annals of Philadelphia" writes of the house and grounds: "It
was for many years after its construction beautifully situated, and surrounded with
rural beauty, being originally on a small eminence, with a row of tall yellow pines in
the rear, a full orchard of best fruit trees close by, overlooking the rising city beyond
the Dock Creek, and having on its front view a beautiful green lawn, gently sloping
to the pleasant Dock Creek and drawbridge, and the whole prospect unobstructed
to the Delaware and the Jersey shore."
