"Here on the bankks of the Ohio river Horace Bell grew to manhoon. He did what every frontier boy might do. ... He knew where to find the old trunks still bearing in their bark the inscription carved by Suire Boon, a brother of Daniel: HERE I KILLED A BEAR Inviting caves hidden among the wooded hills beckoned him. All these the lad explored. He liked best the one by Buck creek near the home place, which had saved the life of Squire when he was fleeing from Indians. Inside he gazed in wonder at the drawings of bird and beast and Biblical quotations cut in the walls by the old pioneer.
