| To-Do | Write to Fulton Historical Society Historical Society of Fulton N.Y. 177 S First Street Fulton, NY Phone: 315-598-4616 Fulton Historical Society Revives Display For Anniversary Event Submitted by Friends of History in Fulton http://fultondailynews.com/index.php/fulton/news/community/fulton_historical_society_revives_display_for_anniversary_event Both celebrating anniversary years, the Fulton historical society and the Numismatic Society will mark milestones together Sunday at the Fulton Municipal Building. Friends of History in Fulton will revive historical displays that were introduced during the July 2002 Fulton Canal Days celebration during the Numismatic Society’s annual coin show. The joint event will be held at the Community Room at the municipal building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. According to a Friends of History spokesperson, the historical displays represent the culmination of 1-1/2 years of research by Kathy Mihalek and Jeanette Peacock and focus on "the men who established and built the historical businesses and majestic homes that lined the streets of Fulton around 1900 and which ones are still here." The exhibit reportedly includes photographs and biographies of the first nine mayors of the city, as well as, "the men who literally built this city, with information and photographs of where they lived and even their tombstones in the local cemeteries," an event organizer said. Two families featured in the display are the DeWitt Gardner and Henry S. Gardner blood lines in Fulton's history and how they were genealogically connected several generations prior to the men who built the famous Gardner & Seymour Flour Mill on North First Street in the flour district. DeWitt Gardner, who was also a contractor, built his luxurious home fashioned after a Spanish villa on South First Street, which later became the Knights of Columbus building. Henry S. Gardner, a tanner, actually moved his home from South First Street to East Broadway rolling it on logs down South First Street (that home is now the Tropical Fish Store) and then built his other home on Oneida Street (which is the main building of the Assembly of God Church). Other families and homes featured in the exhibit include Hiram Lester Paddock; J.R. Sullivan; George Johnston; the Van Buren family with photographs of the inside of David Van Buren’s noted home facing the river called The Pillars; Carlon Church; Pattersons; and Drs. Charles and Charles Bacon, noted father and son physicians whose offices and home is now the Ludington Law office. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyoswego/oswegocounty/famsketch1a.html De Witt Gardner was born in Cazenovia, Madison county, March 28, 1819, son of Benjamin and Polly (Allen) Gardner. He lived on his father’s farm until sixteen, when he came to Fulton where two of his sisters were then living, Mrs. Frederick Seymour, and Amanda, a teacher in the Fulton schools. His first wife was Elizabeth Simmons, by whom he had two children: Frances, wife of Henry Silkman, and Abbot. His second wife was Jane Townsend, and they had one child, Charles, who died in 1891 aged forty years. Mr. Gardner married third Sarah Smith, by whom he has one daughter, Alice May. | |
