| Letter |
31 July 1837 |
In Sep 2005, there was a letter for auction on eBay. Here is the description: Here's a folded lettersheet, folded in the postal style, but there are no postal markings, and so it was likely hand carried by a friend or relative. It is addressed to Mr. Griffin Story, town of Milan. and is a long one and a half page letter written by Sarah Story to her 'Respected Father'. The headline is July 31st, 1837. I think that's the year date, hard to say exactly what the last digit in the year date is. Some abstracts: "I have rote too and put them in the brooklyn post office but have never received any." "Mary did not say anything about them in her letter so I expect you never got them, so Lewis thought that he would rite one and put in N Y post office and that one I guess you mist of got." "... there has been great many por peopple that have starved to death and is yet, still starving but we have had enough to eat as yet and gess shall make out. I will tell you the way and onely way that trade has kept a going is that every person had to make his own money they had s(m)all bills struck some more shillings [???] to and so on but Lewis has [---]lled all his in now has no more out at present ..." " ... he is going to Saratoga springs he and his wife want when you rite you would let us wether he come to our house or not ..." "I have got so that I can go any wharse in N Y and beat any one in the store except Rowland and there ant [?] any body can beat him he is called te [sic] smartest boy in brooklyn for Lewis has bought a milk round [?] and Rowland goes with that and tens the shop to, I like it vary well here ..." More names and news mentioned. There's a sketch / layout of a floor plan on the back fold, no notations to it. |
