John Cowls; John Cowles, born in 1772 in Connecticut came to Bradford. County in 1805, his ancester John having come from England and founded Farmington, Massachusetts about 1634. He was also one of the founders of Hatfield, where he died. From him descended in successive generations Timothy, Joseph, and John, father of the Orwell pioneer, who was also a descendant of Captain Joseph Ellsworth who put out the lights and hid the Connecticut Charter in the oak at Hartford when Governor Andros by the king's order was trying to revoke it. (Heverly, Patriot & Pioneer Families of Bradford Co., Vol.II, page 98). When he arrived in Orwell, his money, all in silver dollars, filled a half-bushe1 measure. He purchased land and worked in improving it until his death July 11, 1825. Among other things Mr.Cowles was remembered for was his characteristic word, "totteration", used when a little vexed. He married first Miss Mary Abigail Johnson, (born 1771 in Connecticut, died September 13, 1810 in Orwell) daughter of Artemus Johnson of Burlington, Connecticut; second, Lucy Coburn. Given under the seal of the Register this 15th Day of June AD 1827 pg 83 - Burr Ridgway Adm of Samuel Wells decd. Citatioce Issuece April 13th AD 1831 to widow & heirs of Samuel Wells deceased to appear on Saturday the 23rd same month at 2'oclock P.M. to accept or renounce their right to administer De Bonis Non upon the estate of the said Samuel Wells decd April 25, 1831. Theron Wells and Shubal Wells appear & by their consent continued to Tuesday May 10th 183[blank] at 7:oclock P.M. Pursuant to continuous the said Shubal and Theron appeared & ___ to take Letters of Amininstration De Bonis Non to any other person. Caveat filed May 11, 1831. Dec 8, 1830 affidavit of H. Wells filed noting there was a residue of personal property after the discharge of the former administrators - whereupon it is decreed that Letters of Administratio De Bonis Non be issued to some suitable & discreet person.
