| Birth | 14 November 1794 | New Hartford, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, The Chaffee gives that date and says he was born in New Hartford, Litchfield, CT. All his census records also say CT. Since in the 1810 census he would only be 15 or 16, and not head of a household, the Theron in CT can't be him.1 |

| Death | 1 February 1869 | Orwell, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania, Orwell church book pg 55-56 Azubah Chaffee was the great-great-grandmothor of Mrs. Frank Dimock of Wyalusing, Pa. Azubah was born Sept. 3, 1760, the daughter of John and Dorothy Sanger of a family of 18 chi1dren. Azubah Sanger married at Woodstock, Ct., May 25, 1783 Samuel Chaffee, who was born at Woodstock June 9, 1760, and died there Oct. 20, 18l3. She lived with her son Luther in a square, frame house at the four corners of Wells Hollow in Orwell township. The "all" part of the house was built for her use. She was a pensioner of the Revolutionary War. Miranda (or Maranda), wife of Theron Wells, who died February 1, 1869 at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 28 days, was a daughter of Samuel and Azubah (Sanger.) Chaffee. She was a sister of Luther Chaffee who was born October 26, 1787, and married, first Amy Browning; second, Julia Waterman, born March 4, 1810, at North Haven, Ct., daughter of William and Miriam (Thorpe) Waterman; Julia died at Sayre, Pa., in 1895 with burial at Tioga Point cemetery. Her daughter, Alice Emily Chaffee, married George N. Johnson of LeRaysville, (son of Joel), and was the maternal grandmother of Mrs. Frank Dimock (nee Alice E. Pierce.), who remembers her grandmother taking care of the Chaffee lot in the old cemetery where the inscriptions were found. (See page 55). pg 55 - In Memory of Maranda, Wife of Theron Wells, Died Feb. 1, 1869, Aged 78 yrs. 7 mos. & 28 D. M. W. Separate foot stones with initials: J. W., R.E. 1 |

| Birth | 31 July 1771 | New Hartford, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, age 55y 7m 20d from death works out to this date. Son Theron's 1880 census says both parents born CT, in spite of the Orwell church record saying VT. New Hartford for his birth place is assumed because his parents were married there, and his son was born there. However, he might have been born across the county line in Burlington, Hartford County, about 8 miles away. This would solve the Orwell church record that says he was born in Burlington VT - someone made a mistake and put VT instead of CT. Note that the Samuel born 11 Nov 1766in Wethersfield, Hartford Co, CT is not our Samuel, as that one married Anna Griswold in 1787 per http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/4791/williamsamuelmorris.html |

| Note | 1800 | About the year 1800, it was decided that the land claimed under the Connecticut title belonged to Pennsylvania. A large number of the settlers had paid Thayer more or less for their lands, and on the decision being made that his title was worthless, so enraged were the victims that Thayer found it expedient to seek a less heated locality. (The Susquehanna company's townships were Watertown, which was five miles Square, and granted to Daniel Brown, Sept. 5, 1794; and Graham, granted to Sheldon Graham, of Albany Co. NY, March 4, 1795. Lots were sold in Graham to Captain Samuel Wells, of Hartford, Conn. Theron Darling, Francis Mesusan, and Josiah Grant..." This Capt Samuel Wells is of an older generation, and not our Samuel3 |
| Residence | 1802 | Orwell, Luzerne (now Bradford) Co., Pennsylvania, The following is extracted from Clement F. Heverly, Pioneer and Patriot Families of Bradford County, 1770-1800, Vol. 1, Bradford Star Print, 1913. Local Government For twenty-five years before the organization of Bradford county, the local government of the Northern townships of Luzerne was in the hands of officers, appointed by the Court, except justices-of-the-peace who were appointed by the Governor. Assessors and tax collectors were appointed by the Governor. Assessors and tax collectors were appointed by the County Commissioners. The constable was the most important officer in the new townships. His bailiwick embraced a great scope of country and each constable was responsible for the peace and order in his district. He was required to go to Wilkes-Barre, the county seat, a distance of 70 miles to make report to court. If he failed to do so, the court imposed a fine of not less than $4 and sometimes the penalty imposed was $8. Officers for the several districts were appointed as follows: (partial) Orwell: 1802-’3 Samuel Wells 1805 Asahel Johnson 1812 Theron Darling |

| CAUTION | Artemus Johnson; Jemima, the wife of Samuel Wells, is not proven to be the daughter of Artemus Johnson (and the sister of Asahel Johnson). In the church history cited elsewhere, it is claimed she is Asahel's sister. However, other places it is claimed that Artemus had two daughters, Mary & Abigail, with no mention of a Jemima. However, my inclination is to believe that this is another daughter fitting in between potential brothers William (b.1772) and Truman (b.1775). We know for sure that Samuel's wife is named Jemima, and there must have been some reason for the history to claim that she was Asahel Johnson's sister. | |
| Marriage | Samuel Wells; "Samuel Wells, who married a sister of Asahel Johnson, came from Burlington, Vermont (sic, s/b CT not VT), and settled on the farm just south of Johnson, in 1799. His oldest son, Theron, now owns the property." History of the Churches of Orwell, PA 1803-1951 by Detty "Jemima Wells, fourth of those joining August 3, 1816 was the wife of Samuel Wells who came in 1797 to Orwell from Burlington Vermont (sic, s/b CT not VT).3 | |
