Burial: His grave is the second oldest existing burial plot inEdgartown, MA. 1660: Moved with his family to Nantucket Island. Resided on Nantucket. Appointed dog-catcher as a teenager with Nathaniel Barnard. The dogsbelonged to the Indians, but preyed on the whites' livestock. The dogswere enclosed in a pound, and the men were to be paid 3 pounds in eithercorn, butter or cheese, a fine which only angered the Indians, becausethey didn't understand the system. He was fined for taking wheat from an Indian. He had to return the 4bushels and compensate the Indian for lost time bringing the complaint tocourt. By 1670 his father had conveyed to him half his rights at Nantucket. 1 Dec 1678. In his father's will, he was left his father's new dwellinghouse with all other houses adjoining upon it, to come to his possessionat his mother's death. 1683: Moved to Edgartown, MA on Martha's Vineyard Island. He worked thereas a blacksmith. (2) 1684, 5 Jan: Commissioned Lt. in the Militia. (2) His family joined the Society of Friends and helped establishQuakerism on Martha's Vineyard. (2) Owned quite a bit of property on Martha's Vineyard at his death. JOHN COFFIN, (Tristram,3 Peter,2 Nicholas1), born at Haverhill, Mass. 30Oct. 1647, the son of Tristram,3 and Dionis (Stevens) Coffin was thefirst one of this large and well-known family to take up his residence atthe Vineyard. John4 Coffin was a blacksmith and lived in Nantucket withhis father until 1682 when he settled in Edgartown and carried on histrade until his death. He married DEBORAH AUSTIN, daughter of Joseph andSarah (Starbuck) Austin of Nantucket 1668. He became a considerable ownerof real estate in the town and died 5 Sept. 1711. His widow returned toNantucket and died there 1724. (1966 Addenda: John Coffin came toEdgartown from Nantucket. He was the first one of this large and well-known family to take up his residence at the Vineyard. It will not be necessary to reheasrse their ancestral history and their origin in brixton, Devonshire, as numerous publications on the subject by genealogists of the family are availableto students. John4 Coffin was a black smith and lived in Nantucket with hisfather until 1682when he settled in E. and carried on his trade until hisdeath. He m. Deborah Austin, dau of Joseph and Sarah (Starbuck) Austin ofNantucket 1668.
