Note* | | MATTHEW MAYHEW (Thomas,3 Robert,2 Simon1), b. abt. 1550, resided in theparish of T., and is described in his will as a 'yeoman' by which term ismeant to be conveyed, legally speaking, a freeholder next under the rankof 'gentleman'; for being descended from the line of a third son of anestablished family he had not the quality that then attached to theeldest branch. Nevertheless he was a man of substance and left to hisheirs an estate valued at about seven thousand dollars in cash, besideshis real property, as estimated by our present standards. He was buried26 Feb. 1613­14 at T. His marriage to ALICE BARTER 2 Oct.1587 is onrecord at T. and by her he had the following named children: 10. ELIZABETH, bapt. 1 May 1589; m.
