Note*  'On a grimmer note, two gravestones in Chilmark portray a partial skull biting down on crossed bones, perhaps to remind that death is the destruction of the body. One belongs to Mary Mayhew, wife of Matthew Mayhew, who died in 1783, at the age of 56, after bearing 12 children. The other stone stands over the grave ofher daughter Martha, who died at 23 in 1775.' June 18, 1976, Directory Edition, Vineyard Gazette, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.1
