Note*  Pioneer Irish in New England CHAPTER XIV page 230 the town records contain the name of only one Irishman in the periodunder review. That was Dennis Manning, the births of whose children,Betty, David and James, were recorded at Nantucket between 1679 and 1685,and there is also on record the marriage of William Stubbs and Dinah, daughter of Dennis and Catherine Manning, at Nantucket on March 31, 1717.There was a Thomas Manning at Ipswich in 1657, in which year he wasrecorded as the grantor of a homestead and lands at that place to WilliamBuckley.Caldwell Records, p. 6, in Ipswich in the Massachusetts BayColony, by Thomas F. Waters, Ipswich Historical Society, 1905.27 He served in KingPhilips War, and, Thomas Manning, dying intestate, being slain in thewar, the Essex County Court granted letters of administration to hisbrother, Daniel Manning.Records of the Essex County Court, Vol. 6, p.71.28 Another Thomas Manning was at Ipswich in 1685, in which year theSelectmen voted that Thomas Manning, gunsmith of Salem, may be aninhabitant and carry on his trade. Among ye passengers that came in yeshipe Hannah & Elizabeth,New England Historic-Genealogical Register, Vol.28.29 which arrived at Boston on November 4, 1679, there were sevenmembers of a family named Manning, described as from St. Patricks Parish,Darthmouth, England. With the exception of Dennis of Nantucket, I amunable to find any authority for saying that these Mannings were Irish, because there are English as well as Irish families of the name. TheIrish Mannings originally were OMao-ineins, but in course of time thename was anglicised Mannin, Manion and Manning, and their coat of armsbears a triple three-leaf Shamrock.1
