Note* | | Following is an excerpt from a letter to Dr. William B.A.Bentley from his father Edward S. Bentley written 1/12/1955. The children of William and Pleades were all given education unusual for the times. I do not know how they were able to manage it financially. Their second child, Edward Warren Bentley (my grandfather) was born July 23, 1826 at Coleshire, Massachusetts. From his earliest years he was a sufferer from asthma ( which he called 'phthsis' which greatly interfered with his outdoor life and schooling. Despite this he was a hard student and a brilliant scholar, and went to Yale where he graduated with high honors in 1850. After teaching at Lyme, Connecticut, and Rochester, Massachusetts (on Caoe Cod) for several years, he went to the Hartford Theological Seminary where he studied for the ministry. Upon graduation he accepted a call to the Dutch Reformed Church at Ellenville, Ulster County, New York, which was a new community lo. |
