Story* Info from 160AF, p237. "There was a Thomas Tew (1/2 brother), who sa per-
haps brother of Henry. He received a privateer's commission from the Gover-
nor of Bermuda and sailed in an armed sloop for the African coast, going
around the Cape of Good Hope and finally to the Red Sea. He made many cap-
tures and after some years of cruising settled down quietly in Newport again,
having, as is said, repaid the value of the vessel fourteen times over to his
employers. After a few years of inaction at Newport, he was again induced
to start on a venture by some of his old companions, though against his in-
clination, and in an attack on a ship of the Great Mogul, in the Red Sea, he
was desperately wounded in the bowels, which he supported with his hands for
a brief periond in order to still lead the attack, but his men lost heart at
his downfall, and the enemy triumphed. The foregoing is an abstract of the
story as told in a little book which perports to give the 'History of the
Pirates' (including Captains Kidd, Tew, etc., in its narration).
A deposition of John Easton, Sen., made in 1698, shows that in 1694,
while he was Governor, there came to him Captain Thomas Tew and proffered
him 500 pounds, if he would give him a commission as Privateer. The Governor
answered that 'he knew not his design, and the said Tew replied, he should go
where perhaps the commission might never be seen or heard of. The which he
wholly refused to give.' It may have been this refusal of Governor Easton
which induced Captain Tew to seek a commission abroad.
There was a Henry Tew of Boston, Mariner, who died in 1712, at least his
widow Mary took administration that year on his estate (viz., 1712, Jan. 29).
His iventory amounted to 1,050 pounds, 3s., including house and land 300
pounds, silver 193 pounds, 2s, 6d., gold 136 pounds, 10s., books, silver
tankard, etc. It becomes a matter of conjecture whether this Henry Tew was
not a son of Thomas the pirate, and a nephew of Deputy Governor Henry Tew,
