Stephen was 14 years old at the time of his first enlistment, he was 16
years old when he received his discharge, he was 19 years old when he mar
ried his cousin Anna Sweet (2nd cousing), daughter of Thomas Sweet brother
of Job Sweet the bonesetter. He and Anna went with their families to the
Hoosac Valley in NY state where they farmed for several years. From there
they went to Alburgh Springs, VT. Whether the lands they settled on were
bounty lands or not is not known at present.
The families of Stephen and Sylvester Sweet and Thomas Sweet (father of
Anna Sweet, wife of Stephen) moved to Alburgh Springs, Grand Isle, VT
about 1790 from Little Hoosac, NY, their names appear in the town records,
Book I to Book XX covering the years 1790 to 1888. This includes three
generations. Stephen Sweet and Sylvester are on the list of those who took
the Freeman's Oath. They were town officers beginning with the first town
meeting March 1790, BookI, until their deaths. The above information was
taken from unpublished material gathered by Barbara Sweet Whittaker prior
to 1953.
