| Story* | John McNight, born in Ireland 1730 died April 16, 1826. Emigrated to the Colonies in 1773. He was born in County Down Ireland. He married in Ireland. All of his children were born in Ireland. His wife was Nancy Hazlett. After emmigrating to America he settled in eastern Pennsylvania. Revolutionary War Record (From washington DC). He was a private in capt. Cochran's militia of Chester Co., Pennsylvania, serving in the 8th Battalion under Co. Mattew Boyd. He retired from service in March, 1781. After the war he moved with his family to what was afterward Brooks County Virginia. (This county is in the panhandle just opposite Washington Co., Pennsylvania, and is now a part of West Virginia (1938). Here his first wife, Nancy Hazlett McNight died, and he afterward married again but had no issue by his last wife. Sometime before 1815 his second wife died, and in 1815 when 85 years old he emmigrated to Indiana Territory along with the family of his daughter Nancy McNight Hamilton. He bought 160 acres of land and lived with his daugher near where is the town of New Philadelphia, washington Co., Indiana. Here he lived within a mile of his eldest son, William. He died April 16, 1826, and his body is buried in the McNight cemetery about 2 miles west of New Philadelphia and 6 miles east of Salem Indiana. His father died young and his mother married again to a Mr Baily. He had several half brothers.1 | |
